THE BAI VILLAGE

With a population about 1.8 million, the Bai people mainly live in compact communities in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture.

Occupying a total area of 62.5 acres, the Bai Village is mainly composed of traditional residence architecture of the Bai people, which characterized by upturned eaves, bucket arches, carved beams and painted rafters. The layout of “Sanfangyizhaobi”(one compound consisting of three houses on three sides with one screen on the remaining side), “Sihewutianjing” (each compound being equipped with four side rooms and five small yards), the Tie-dyeing workshop, the Carved wooden houses, the Gardeen teahouse, the  Bai opera stage, and the Benzhu temple. The Three Pagodas of the Chongsheng Temple which are reduced to 1/4 of their actual sizes. The row upon row of compound is consisted of spacious and neatly deployed houses. The “Dali Street” which extends from north to south is constructed in the Bai Village for selling refined handicraft works, and the “Bai-minority Folk Customs Museum” and the “Butterfly Exhibition Hall” have been constructed along the street.

The Bai people  has a long history and culture. Folk arts such as the "Bawangbian" (the Conqueror's Whip), the Straw Hat Dance and the Dabenqu (a kind of long narrative poem) are full of joyful atmosphere. Folk festival activities include the “Third Month Fair”, “Raosanling” and “Escorting the Bride back to Wedding”, which are all bustling and joyful. The traditional “Three-Course Tea” of the Bai people has been praised as one of the rarities of the the Chinese ethnic tea ceremonies culture.
