THE YAO VILLAGE

Population of Yunnan’s Yao minority group has numbered over 190,000, only next to that of the Hunan and Guangxi Provinces. Mainly living in counties such as Funing, Jinping, Hekou, Malipo, Guangnan and Mengla, Yunnan’s Yao minority people are classified into the Landian, Guoshan, Shan and Jingdong Yao branches. In terms of origin of the Yao minority group, some experts claim that Yunnan’s Yao minority could be traced to ancient tribes who inhabited the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, whereas others argue that Yunnan’s Yao minority people are offspring of a branch of the ancient Baiyue Tribesmen. Large scale migration into Yunnan of the Yao people started in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. All Landian and Guoshan Yao people worship the Yao-inherited Taoism, and it is the custom of the Yao folks to perform the “Dujie Rite” to mark the adulthood and Taoism conversion for the Yao males who have come of age.

The Yao Village is consisted of houses with upturned eaves, single-storey flats, a rural Taoist temple, a granary and a village gate, all of which show typical features such as neat disposition and influences of the Taoist Culture.
