THE WA VILLAGE

The Wa people have a population about 360,000 and mainly live in compact communities in the Awa Mountain area to the west of the southern section of Lancangjiang River in Yunnan Province.

The Wa Village is located in the southeast of Cuiyi Sandbar. Distributed in the village are thatched stilted architectural complex, the Buffalo-head Square, the Deities Square, the Sigangli carved stone and the granary. The Buffalo-head Square is the place for the ancient buffalo-killing activities of the Was. The buffalo horn right in the middle of the square is their village stake and the two stone figures in front of the square are respectively their male and female ancestors. The Deities Square reflects the Was’ natural worship of animism and never-dying of the soul. The statues of the two stone figures on the square are Muyiji and Ayi’e, who are most worshipped by the Wa people.

The wood-drum dance of the Was is distinctive and strong in beat and bold and uninhibited in style. When dancing, the Wa girls sway their long hair vigorously.  Living scenes including the annual buffalo-killing and sacrificial offering activities, new rice grinding and Tong handkerchief weaving are full of rich delight of life.
