The Achang Village

One of the indigenous ethnic groups of Yunnan Province and with a population of 35,000, the Achang minority people mainly inhabit in Longchuan, Lianghe and Luxi counties of Yunnan’s Dehong Prefecture. Most of the Achang minority people believe in ghosts and gods, and worship a kind of primitive religion inherited from their ancestors, while some Achang people in a number of Yunnan areas also worship the Hinayana or Little Vehicle Buddhism.  Descendants of the Diqiang Tribe, ancestors of the Achang people migrated to the Nujiang River reaches in Northwest Yunnan in the 2nd century. Part of them settled down in the Husa Basin of the present-day Longchuan County in the 13th century, and the rest built their homes in Lianghe area soon afterwards. The skillful blacksmiths of the Achang minority group are good at forging the reputed “Husa knives” in many shapes including swords, daggers and the Tibetan knives. Thanks to their refined workmanship and top quality, the Husa knives have been selling well since historical times not only in Yunnan, but also in the Sichuan Province and the Tibetan Autonomous Region, China, as well as in Myanmar and many other Asian countries.

Typical buildings of the Achang people feature compound-style architectures. It has blue tiles, brick walls and stone columns, such buildings have harmoniously blended with the adjacent architectures such as Village Gates and handicraft workshops.
