THE HANI VILLAGE

The Hanis are a farming ethnic group with a long history in the southwestern border area of China. With a population about 1.3 million, they mainly live in Honghe, Yuanjiang and Wuliangshan and Ailaoshan mountain areas in the Lancangjiang River Basin.

Occupying a total area of 15acres, the Hani Village displays the mushroom-shaped house, Aini mother and  son house and the sun and moon square, which are the most representative of the Nanis. In the village are also a large relief describing the Hanis’ legend that all creatures descended from the fish, the totem column on the migration legend of the Hanis , as well as the mill house, Longba gate and swing ground and terraced fields reflecting their farming and living. The village God tree and the sacrificial stone reveal the Hanis’ religious belief of souls for all creatures and polytheism worship.

Festivals of the Hanis include Nianshouzhalete Festival, Kuzhazha Festival, Rice Transplanting Festival and New Rice Tasting Festival etc. The terraced fields, dubbed as the mountain soul of the Hanis, are the classics of the Hani farming culture and enjoy great reputation.

The most common dances include Three-stringed Dance, Sifang Dance, Palm Fan Dance and Lezuo Dance (dance together) etc.

The religious belief of the Hanis is mainly their worship to the natural forces, which is closely connected to the rich sacrificial offering activities and their agricultural production.
